Hey Folks!

Hope everyone has had a great holiday and a wonderful new year! I know I did! Got a few gifts, hung out with the fam, got dragged along for some shopping, but best of all had a nice juicy delicious week out of work to just relaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaax. :D

Any who, speaking of work, the long anticipated first episode (technically 4th) of Archer Airs January 19th at 10pm. If you like ocelot's, people in wheelchairs, and Burt Reynolds, then you're totally gonna love this season! Check it out!

Last but not least I just want to share a gift my friend Chi Duong made me! She's been a coworker of mine off and on for a few years now, first while I was drawing caricatures at Six Flags over Georgia, now at Floyd County! So freakin cool!

Hey Folks!

So just as fast as it came, New York Comic Con 2011 is now in the past. I gotta say I DEFINITELY had a BLAST this year. Many fans came out to support, Comic and Archer alike. It's always great seeing friends and fellow comic artists/inspirations, but the fans are what make this profession worth while. I just want to thank everyone who came by the Identity booth and picked up a book, print, or commission from me. I'll be looking forward to seeing you guys at the next convention.

Archer Season 3

YO!

Archer Season 3 is DEFINITELY under way! The first episode aired this past Thursday night on FX. Here are the promos for the first 2 episodes. Enjoy!

This is only a taste of the hard work we've accomplished so far (couple of things I've drawn showed up). They'll be playing the next 2 episodes tomorrow and next Thursday to conclude the tie up for any loose ends left from last season, before the season really kicks off in sometime later. So stay tuned folks! Also one of my friends caught this after the first episode

FINALLY!

...DOMO HAS COME BACK..... to the INTERNET!!!!

Hey guys, long time no speak! hope ya didn't already forget me, because I haven't forgotten you! It's been such a long time since I've had free time to post or even make myself available online, but since I have a second now, I have a few updates for you guys.

first up, Baltimore Comic Con! I want to thank everybody who came out and showed some love to me and my studiomates of Identity comics. I went there with over 10 books and 200 cards and ran out of everything! We totally had a blast both days, and I'm looking forward to New York Comic Con this october! Every year Baltimore just get bigger and better, fan-wise. Plus seeing some of my friends (who I never get to see because they're too busy pushing out comic awesomeness) is always a plus.

Also, I'm not sure if I ever mentioned it, but for the last 3 months I've been working full-time as a character illustrator for the FX animated show, ARCHER, (YAY for steady paychecks!) which is why I haven't posted in a while. It's such a great job and this seasons' DEFINITELY going to blow the water out of the first two. Unfortunately, since I put so much time into it, I haven't really had time to do comic work, which sucks. Besides doing caricatures at Six Flags and personal gigs, I've never had a real full-time job. This one takes te cake by a long-shot, PLUS it's a little more than full-time because we're on a production schedule. Though, I'm slowly building a second skin to be able to stay awake long enough to get at least a sketch out a couple days out of the week. Hopefuly I'll be able to update with something really soon, but for now, hold tight! The ride isn't over yet!

Last but not least, :iconidcomics:!! We're moving on up, loud and proud. We're finally going full force into our creator owned book, "THE BROTHERHOOD" The stories coming together very nicely and we can't wait to lay the first 5 issues on you sometime next year. I'm So excited, especially because of the fact that I, myself am just the worst with coming up with ideas of my own. My dream has always been to work for Marvel and DC, but lately I've been feeling like no matter how hard I try, (though I did get Deadpool Family) they don't want to let me in. So the Brotherhood is something that I can say I am a part of, and is mine, and when it becomes successful, I did it without those big publishers. Then we'll see if they still don't want to hire me. Aside from that, we'll be releasing previews of the book at New York Comic Con so you guys should DEFINITELY stop by and pick up a copy!

Heroes Con Recap

Hey guys!

So This years Heroes convention was a BLAST!! Honestly, I was pretty bummed that me and Identity Comics were unable to get a table this year, to the point where I wasn't even gonna go. After some convincing from my lady, I changed my mind, and I gotta say, this has probably been one of the best con experiences I've had so far. It's always a good time, especially because I get to talk to most of my favorite artists, and good friends as well as hang out with them after the show. Guys like Dan Panosian, Skottie Young, Eric Canete, Jason Pearson, and Dave and Greg of Creature Box, and so many more. So much talent in one room, just made me even more pumped to go home and draw like crazy. (then I woke up early the next day to go to work, lol!) I even got to get my work in front of DC editor, Eddie Berganza, which could possibly spring some opportunities with them as well. When you work 24/7 constantly trying to keep yourself alive in the comic world, as well as pay your bills (because you can't draw in the dark) it's events like these that give you the somewhat vacation/ motivating feeling you need to keep going!

For the first time, I also entered two pieces into the annual art auction. One was an inked Colossus drawing, the other was the original Runaways piece I did a while back. The Colossus sold for $150, which for just an inked drawing for my first submission, I was really excited! A lot of people went all out this year. Of course the color work sold for A LOT more, and most artists stepped up to the challenge either with paints, color pencil, or marker. The Runaways piece went into the silent auction so I'm not sure how much that one sold for, but I'm hoping it did well. While there, I chilled with my Australian friend Conny Valentina , who's beautiful Bat girl piece sold for about $3700. If your not familiar with her work, you should be. She's AMAZING!! Speaking of amazing, Adam Hughes managed to top himself, YET again, with his mixed media painting of black cat and Catwoman, selling for a whopping $12,000. Next year, I'm bringing my A game. I already know what I'm gonna do, I just have to figure out a way to do it. It got pretty rowdy at one point, but just crazy loads of fun.

Had to leave WAAAAY early on Sunday because I couldn't find a later ride, but overall it was a really good time. Definitely looking forward to next years' Heroes show, as well as the shows to come this year. For now, it's back to work! update for that coming next time :)

Sup Folks!

Been a minute, but as usual, I'm coming to you LIVE to bring you another update on the "haps" of your friendly neighborhood comic artist. Me, that is.

This time though, I figure since not many people keep up with me on here anyways, I'll do it in the form of a vent. Though I got the Deadpool Family book out for Marvel, these last few weeks/months have been pretty frustrating. Seems like every time I think I'm in a good place, rent times comes around, then school loans, taxes, phone, etc. (So glad I don't own a car. ) Commissions have been pretty slow since the new year rolled around, but its given me time to work on my own stuff. At the same time though commissions are what have been paying my bills for the last two years, so it's a bitter sweet situation because when the commissions aren't good I have to force myself to do color flatting, which is also bitter sweet because I m helping out a friend by doing so, but it's literally the most boring, lowest of the low, slave laboring comic job ever.

Anyways whats been bothering me the most lately is the fact that, for two years after graduating I've been busting my balls hardcore to get to where I am and in some prospects I feel like I'm still not where I want to be, but then there are some people still in school, who complain about how they're not getting anywhere and how their life is terrible because nobody will like their work, but at the same time CONSTANTLY getting work without even trying. And not just small fan commission work, but REAL, professional work. It's like I'm watching them live my dream and they don't even appreciate it... -___-

All in all, we all have our ups and down moments, unfortunately not all of us are lucky enough to get everything handed to us on a silver platter, but we just have to pick ourselves up, and just keep working hard until we get what we want. Though I feel like I'm struggling, I'm still thankful for everything that has happened for me so far as, I'm pretty sure with the achievements I've made, their are some older folks feeling the same about me. Not saying that there is a race to be the best or anything, but for some reason when age comes into question when comparing achievements, a great bit of pride gets thrown in as well depending on which side of the age scale you fall on, and lately swallowing my pride has almost become a regular past time...

Anyways, vent all aired out, now we can get to a more positive note. The year is not even close to being over yet and I have a few promising things going on that I can hopefully come away with proudly when it's all finished. As far as appearances for the rest of the year, I'll be touring alongside my studio mates of Identity Comics. I'll definitely be at Heroes Con in North Carolina, but getting a table is a maybe, but look out for us at Baltimore Con and New York Comic Con as we will be at both in full effect. I think I may try to make my way out the Dragon Con as well this year, but I can't make any promises.

I guess that's all for now. Hopefully soon I can actually update with some artwork and not lame venting. lol.

FREE COMIC BOOK DAY and other news...

Hello all,

Coming to you LIVE to bring you another report on the whereabouts of your lovable friendly neighborhood comic artist. That is.... me of coarse... First up, what I'm working on...

Besides the release of my first Marvel Book, Deadpool Family, I have a couple of smaller, more personal projects in the midst. One is a super action packed story called "The Brotherhood," which is a group collaboration between my studio mates of Identity Comics and I. Unfortunately I don't have anything I can show at the moment, but there will be very soon. We've been working pretty hard to get the story and characters together so once we start releasing more info we know your gonna love it! Other than that, it's all freelance and commissions.

Next, up my appearances for the next upcoming months. This Saturday I'll be doing a book signing for Free Comic Book day at 2 locations. First from 11am-3pm at Criminal Records Atlanta, then from 4pm-7pm at Oxford Comics. (Check the links for more information) If you live near the Atlanta area and you have a lonely copy of Deadpool family with no signature, You like my work and you want a sketch or print, or you just think I'm a swell guy and want to come say hello, feel free to totally stop by at any location!

New header and updates

What up folks!

Hope alls' been well with you guys. I think by now I don't have to apologize for my lack of updates, you know the deal. So much work, so little time. But, as a reward for your patience, here's a nice long update post to make up for it!

FIRST! You notice anything different? Well, along with a slew of construction on the site itself I finally got the chance to update my Header, which I've been meaning to do for years. Crits are always welcome!

Remember the Comic Book Resources contest I entered in my last post? Well the results are finally in and I made the top 5!!! I think like 5th place! Now normally I wouldn't be too happy about that because like the great Ricky Bobby says, "If you ain't first, your last!" lol, but in this case I did the thumbnails, layout, and penciled the whole page the night before it was due just for the fun of it, so to still make top 5 I think is pretty impressive. Maybe if they have another competition I'll put my money where my mouth is and actually try to win. :D You can check the link here:

Also I've been working pretty hard with a few writers on a book that we're hoping to get published. Right now its in the beginning character design/thumbnail phase, so maybe I'll get to shed a little more light on that the closer it is to being done. Of coarse I can't leave you guys without flaunting some of the most recent commissions I've done.

This was a character design commish. Had a lot of fun playing around with color theory in this one, some of which I also applied to my new header as well. Figure if I practice enough it'll come more natural to me. Who knows, I might even get good at it!

Very fun character design. I'd love to draw this guy more, but This is a returning client to be prepared to see more like 'em in the next couple weeks.

Finally, this is a CD cover I did for a Metal band called "Lessayel." You can check the finished, colored version at this link, AceofSpades DevArt, done by my friend Cristian Capasso. Very awesome collab, hope we get to do more.

Finally. DEADPOOL FAMILY #1, for Marvel Comics folks! This is my second time getting published, but my first MAJOR opportunity with the publisher I want to eventually contract with! Comes out April 6th!!! SO I'm Urging everyone, if you have kids, grand kids, nephews, little cousins, adopted siblings, orphan Annie friends, alien doppelgangers or you fancy good wholesome funny comics yourself the PLEASE check it out and pick it up! Unfortunately there is no prize that I know of, but it's a chance to build my portfolio, while getting a little recognition for it. But in this profession, recognition is EVERYTHING!

With the ever so amazing Jason Pearson cover, it's a small anthology of 3 different stories, including me, alongside artists Darnell Johnson and my Girlfriend, Irene Strychalski, starring the cast of the Deadpool Corpse series. Mine covering Kidpool and Dogpool. It's a book stocked full of action, grotesque romance, and canine fun! It hits stores in April!!

This is my second time being published, but my first for a major company. I definitely feel blessed to have this opportunity and I hope my career only gets better from here. Thanks to everyone so far who has shown admiration for my work, I wouldn't be anywhere without you guys! Here's hoping to see my work on more shelves in 2011!!!

2011, Here I come!!

First and foremost, I want to give a HUGE shout out to AXEL ALONSO, who was recently promoted to Editor-in-Chief at Marvel Comics. Best way to kick off the year. That guys' one of the hardest working editors I can think of, and he definitely deserves it.

As for me, my 2010 was pretty good. Finished a lot of commissions, made it to more conventions, met my all time comic idol, officially became an official member of a studio, moved to an awesome apartment from a not so awesome apartment, and gained an awesome girlfriend! Now it's time to make 2011 my year. My only goal is to get published by a major publisher. Also maybe to start working out again.... Unfortunately my amazing washboard abs from my High school boxing and band days are slowly disappearing due to sittin on my butt and drawing 24/7.

Wizard World Atlanta Recap

Hey folks!

Big update this time. So Wizard World Atlanta was actually a little more than I expected for a 2- day show. Don't get me wrong, it lived perfectly up to its reputation as far as crappy promotion and unorganized placement, so obviously sales sucked, but the show itself at least held more real estate than I thought it would. The people were nice though. Screwed up about half of Artist Alleys table placements, but at least they were pretty responsive about accommodating everyone. I hope they take some pointers from the folks who run Comic Con and continue to grow. We need more local shows.

Anywho, The Experience was pretty cool too. I got to meet a few WWE entertainers and movie stars including Amy Dumas (Lita), Kevin Nash, Torrie Wilson, Vivica A. Fox, and Pam Grier. There were alot more stars there as well but I had to try to make some money. Plus, I talked to my all-time idol, Humberto Ramos! Made my whole weekend.

Wizard World Atlanta

That's right folks, The Atlanta Comic Convention, aka Wizard World Atlanta will be in town this Saturday and Sunday and I'll be there!! If your gonna be in town feel free to stop by. Hope you guys had a great Thanksgiving! I know I did. Now it's back to work. Who knew a month could fly by so fast! It's already rent time again. I swear I need more time in the day, or at least more fays in the month. - _ -.... lol!

Anyways, here's more recent commission work. Unlike the others, these were also inked by me. I love doing these type of commissions. It makes pretty good practice for doing full illustrations. Hey guy,

I think I'm due for another update, so here are some commissions I've just recently finished. I'm finding that these illustrations are actually REALLY fun and it's such good practice. I'm sure I've got a long way to go before I'll have my work on the cover of the funny books, but I feel like the more of these I do, the better, and faster I'm getting. Plus they're a nice break from all the thinking involved in doing pages.

This one was interesting. My first finished double page spread. It involves the Darkness from Darkhorse comics, riding The Hulk like an Ogre, while hovering over Venom, Batman, and Spawn versions of Army of Two soldiers. Definitely alot of fun!

I don't have anything new to post myself, so, I'll take this time to show off a little collab between me and my other half, Irene Strychalski.

Hopefully you guys remember this pin-up of Marvel's Runaways, I did a few months back. If not, scroll down and you'll see it. Anyways, my amazing and talented female counterpart inked this up for me, and it'll only be a matter of time before I decide to color it! Don't get me wrong though, she's by no means just an "inker." She writes, illustrates, animates, and sculpts as well. Doing what I do, better than how I do it, AND more. One of the most talented people I've ever met in my life. If you don't know her work, you'd definitely be doing yourself a favor by checking her out. She's gonna be HUGE one day.

FINALLY! An Update!!!!

I know RIGHT! Dude! I really suck at this. and my studio mates say I should get a twitter -_-...... LOL!!! be the loneliest, most boring page EVER!!!! so anyways, I guess I can start with my new place!

Just moved there a few weeks ago from the old beaten down shack. I gotta say, I'm lovin this new place ALOT better. Had to do a BOAT load of commissions to be able to afford it though. I'll be posting some of those in the next update so this one isn't to cluttered with images, because there are a lot of them. A WHOLE lot.

Also, I just came from Baltimore con last week which was AWESOME. Sat behind the table with my studiomates, Jerry, Penny, Joe, and Bryan(flash) at Identity comics. If you don't know 'em, you should check 'em out. All members, AMAZING artists and people I've known since I was about 15, and all who've watched me grow into the somewhat cool artist you know today. actually, here is a collage of some of the commissions we did while at the con and one of the other marker sketches I did . I suck at taking pictures of the works I do at cons, but I'm responsible for the peter pan, Magma, plus the Bolt image.

It was my first time in a WHILE using marker, but I like how they all came out. I'll also be attending New York comic con, just as a guest though. No table this time because I want to use that opportunity to really get my portfolio in front of some editors and try to get as much feedback as possible. Hey folks!

So I haven't been updated lately but it's all for good reason. Ya boy's been pretty busy. Sad to say that it's been mostly "I need money or I'm homeless" manual labor type busy, and not "OMG I still have 5 pages to draw and my Deadlines tomorrow, " busy. But ya gotta crack a few eggs before you can make an omelet right? Is that even the right saying for this occasion? lol.

Anyways, besides moving stuff, filling in flats, coloring storyboard backgrounds for money, (and not getting payed to draw comics :( .....yet) I have managed to get a couple character commissions out! YAY!

All but the Witchblade drawing are pinup illustrations, creator copyrighted by their respectable owners, Witchblade is a character sketch and is of course owned by Top Cow, so no stealy please! and if any of you guys would like a character drawn feel free to email me for prices! Until next time.

So I've REALLY been having fun with these sketches. They're pretty much the same amount of detail as I do my sketch commissions. Maybe a little dirtier. But they keep me on my toes, and really allow me to play around without thinking as much as I do in pages.

I saw my mentor and good buddy Shawn Crystal drawing Wolverine so I got inspired to draw my own version of 'em.

The second sketch is from DarkHorse's "Umbrella Academy." Don't really know much about it, but it was a sketch challenge over at The Temple of Cartoon Mojo. If you like awesome student work go check it out.

Next is from DC Comics' "Angel and the Ape." Pretty funny comic. A lot different than what I'm used to reading from DC. Added some inks just to see how I feel about 'em.

Finally it's CHAMBER!!! One of my most favorite Marvel Comics characters of all times. Though it would totally suck to have his powers his character development rose above the stands for me.

Hey folks, just keeping up with my monthly updates! Been trying to keep myself busy for the last couple weeks. I say this all the time but I think I'm finally getting to the point where I'm confident that I can get a job. I feel like I keep getting closer and closer, and I got my foot in the door, but I just haven't been able to push it open yet.

So this year will be my year. Been working on new sample pages, submitted a pitch to ONI Press, shootin' out emails, working freelance to keep a roof over my head, and constantly drawing to make sure my skills are constantly improving.

If all goes well, I'm looking to be able to make it to Heroes Convention, New York Comic convention, and/or Baltimore Convention. IF (and that's a big IF) I do make it to any of these, if I'm not walking around pimpin' out my portfolio, you'll most likely be able to find me at the SCAD/Temple of cartoon Mojo booth, or with my good friends at Identity Comics. I know there are ALOT of "if's" in this paragraph but unfortantely money's pretty tight around these parts at the moment, so we'll see what happens.

in the mean time, in between time, here's a quick sketch I did of one of my favorite DC Comics character's (n believe me, I don't have a lot of them). Literally took about 10 minutes, was pretty fun, think I'll do some of these more often!!

Newest sequential pages. These were done for a competition called the Morning International Comic Competition. We were pretty tight on the deadline so I'm hoping we made it on time. The story is called "Alpha and Omega."All in all, again, had lots fun with these. In fact, it's probably some of the better pages I've done so far, and just in time to top off the end of the year. Got to play around with a lot of textures and spot blacks. Wish I just had one more week to polish everything up but it's up to the judges now. As for me, looks like I'm going to be working a lot harder to make a name for myself, one page at a time!

Yo! It's been a while since I posted anything, but it's only because almost everything I've been doing is some kind of top secret. So here's a project I've been working. Character designs for a writer I've been working closely with lately, Jim Gourley, who's on his way to the comics world like me! Just finished a couple sequential pages for this story, for his pitch package. I can't post any of em yet, but he's been sending them to every publishing company he could think of so I think we have a pretty good chance of making something happen, but who knows....

I think as of right now I'm in the crappiest part of the comics biz there is. "The Waiting Period." It's the point where you start putting your stuff out there, talking to artists and editors, pretty much introducing yourself to the world. But then all the editors are either trying to figure if your good enough or old enough, because there is always an overflow of either REALLY crappy art, or REALLY awesome art, n if your like me, the average stuff just gets lost in the bunch. (how are people getting so good nowadays, so insane...) or they keep you on "stand-by" until something arrives, and depending on how much they know you personally, could take longer than expected......Like they say, "it's not what you know, it's who you know".... ya know?

... and that what grinds my gears. lol, sorry just had to say it.
But naw, I think I have good things coming my way pretty soon. Marvel, here I come!!

Hey folks! long time no update!

So I've finally gotten published work inside of Oni Press's "Resurrection" series. Justin Greenwood is the main artist, Marc Guggenheim is the writer. I did a short back story introducing President Bill Clinton into the cast. Here are a couple preview pages I did but you gotta pick up the comic to find out what happens!!

Ok folks, so after all this time I've FINALLY finished the inks to my tryout pages for Marvel. I'd say it actually took me about a little less than a page a day when I really got into it, but because of other work and money issues I had to set them aside for a bit. I actually had fun with these. Still think I need some work in some areas but I'm pretty confident in what I have. Made a few changes in the inks from the pencils, but they all worked out pretty well.

That's right people you heard me! Marvel's giving me a shot at greatness and of course, out of all the options I had, the book I chose to HOPEFULLY get my big break is none other than Ultimate Spiderman! SOOO here are some of the character designs and 5 pages from an AUTHENTIC Ultimate Spidey script!! Written by Brian Michael Bendis, originally drawn by the great Stuart Immonen, this is my take on it.

Overall I LOVED doing these pages! Though I'm still a little hesitant when it comes to my storytelling and drawing ability sometimes, I was really confident about these pages. I learned a lot about myself as well in doing these. Like for one, being hungry slows me down DRASTICALLY!!! and two, though they have to be done, windows suck! lol!

BUT... anyways let me know what you think, I'm looking for some major crits here so let me have it!! inks and colors coming REAL SOON!

So here are the Machine Man pages as promised. It's featuring Spider-Man and Ultron. i actually had a lot of fun with these. actually, after doing these two sets of pages, I feel like the action stuff is DEFINITELY where I'm strongest at. like admittedly there are a few perspective issues i see in this set, but the storytelling aspect was so much easier and straight forward than the wolverine story and I feel like it definitely shows. not that i don't like the wolverine set anymore, but i DO think these are stronger. but I'm working on it! these'll be inked and colored so expect it soon!

so here's my latest sequential stuff, it's a couple of pages from a wolverine story I got from a Jason Aaron script. I haven't seen what the original artist did for it so after i finish I'll be curious to look that up ... I DEFINITELY feel like I'm getting A LOT better, but I still have a LOOOONG ways to go. I'm still not as confident in my line work yet (hence the super tight pencils) but after getting a few crits, namely one from Marvel Exec editor Axel Alonso, I SO have a style showing through so that was a HUGE boost for me. so thas it for now... machine man pages comin soon!

hmmm.... so it's gettin' down to the wire, I'm REALLY lookin forward to this spring quarter. My last quarter. right now I dunno what's gonna happen. I STILL feel like i'm not at the level I need to be professionally as far as my storytelling OR my art. Like storytelling I don't mind because I'm just learnin' it, but i feel like I've been drawin all my life, by now I shouldn't be having anatomy issues or crooked perspective, but at this point i really don't know what to do but to keep drawing, so, i guess that's what i'll do....

So here's the BIG "Cahoona" the 11 page Spiderman story i did. I REALLY REALLY wanted to pump out some quality professional looking pages but unfortunately i only had 3 weeks to do it from pencil to color and letter, PLUS the pages i posted earlier, AND 3 more pages n I guess I dropped the ball? can't say i'm dissapointed cause I did my best, but there are still SOOOO many people out there who I know could do WAAYYY better. but, here it is, the best rush job i've ever done!... it was actually done in color too but it was mostly semi-almost-half finished flats so i just grey-scaled em all....

YAY! did this 10 pager , about a kid with the sickle cell trait learning how to make smart choices about eating.....I'm REALLY excited about the way it came out. I definitely think these are some of the best set of sequentials i've done thus far, especially the last 5 pages.... ummm don't want to give TOO much info away on it yet, but it MIGHT be used for something so i'll update later but for now looking for some MAJOR critiques!!!

Winter Break

HEY folks! just tryin to keep up with the updates, this winter break has been REALLY nice 4 me. Thanxgiving was awesome and last week I recovered from finals VERY well from all the sleep I got,lol. Now is back to work for me. time's winding down and I'm still not as ready as I want to be for the professional world. so I'm DEFINITELY using this break to my advantage. working on sequentials and really trying to focus on getting my storytelling right. AND at the same time trying to finish a page a day. man is tough cause there's SOOOO much I learned within the past year ALONE, and now soo much to think about when I'm drawing and the random hunger distractions don't help either...ESPECIALLY with people like one of my friend, Irene Strychalski, only 19 and is WAY better than I EVER hope to be..... maybe I can grow up to be the guy that fills in the blacks in her pages, lol!!!! i dunno, I don't plan 2 go out without a fight tho i'ma be up there with Humberto Ramos, Frank cho, and ED Mcguinnes one day.. i think with the help of Shawn Crystal, Nolan Woodard, and the guys at Gaijin studios, i CAN be a sequential legend... of some.. sort......

... but for now, here's the second version of the "Firebreather" challenge I did, just for the sake of an update cause is kinda old now, and a drawing i did last week for a sketch challenge over @ www.templeofcartoonmojo.blogspot.com , go check it out is there and a nightcrawler sketch i did a while back ... This time though i'm a little proud of myself because i was expecting to suck, then slowly build into getting good at it, but it was actually pretty easy to get into. see 4 urself...

YAY!! more concepts.... here's our vehicle assignment. one vehicle had to be technological and the other had to be organic. probably most of my work went into the organic because it had the most detail. I kind of rushed the "whale-mobile." i wanted to get tighter with the details but i just ran out of time and i like sleep. Was a lot of work overall but i got em done.

my idea for the organic was pretty much a camouflage pirate ship. the look of it is an empty island. other pirate ships would either not pay attention to it or get drawn in to the island look. element of surprise, badda bing badda boom, either the monster under the shell will destroy you with its tenticles, or the ppl hiding on it will sneek on your ship and over run you.

the snowmobile is based around the look of a whale. just a simple snowmobile, only the closed version is the land rover and the open version is and under water swimmer. That way it can move faster and swifter like a real fish.

BAM!!! finally kickin' off the new school year and now i'll be posting stuff from my "concept design" class. FILLED with titans like Darnell Johnson, Brandon Wilson, Hung Le (Tommy), David Bonilla, and more!!!!! Alls i gotta say is THIS IS GONNA BE A FUN CLASS!!! check these guys out if u don't believe me.... but for the 1st assignment we had to do two combatants. no specific battle ground, no specific era, no specifics at all, just two combatants. So i when everybody else did warrior type alien "David and Goliath" type characters, I did a young kid and an old fat guy in the late 1960's, early 70's, and their arena is the pool table. It was a crazy process that led up to these finished drawings... first we came up with like over 40 silhouettes for each character to get the feeling for them and make them recognizable. then we did value studies and color tests. was actually kind of tough for me but I'm just gettin' started so... till next time!!!!

more model sheets from my character design for animation class, this was actually done a few weeks ago, but i've just been lazy with scanning, should be posting some new colored stuff from my final for the class but those will come later today or sometime tomorrow.

in this set is one of the characters from our group project... here is the main character of this story, Caine, which I was in charge of. The first two are his turnarounds, facial expressions and action poses, the third is the line-up of m,ost of the characters in the story put together. We decided to differentiate from the norm and have them in a game of "Tug-a-Rope" rather than just standing there. I did Caine, Able, and penciled Tank. The rest was drawn by my friend Jamar Myrick...

Character designs for animation

So here's the recent works from my "Character design for storyboarding and animation" class.... The first one is a line up of the characters from the movie "Princess Bride," from left to right is:
Bettercup, Wesley, Indigo Montoya, and Fezzik.... pretty much like the class indicates, we had to take some of the characters from the movie and create them as cartoon characters, so here's my interpretation of the characters....

the next four are all part of the same project. We picked names out of a hat and had to adopt what ever we picked into a, animation franchise of our choice. I ended up picking "hobo and Bartender" and the one franchise i could think of was "Family Guy." lol! These are the turnarounds and action poses of my two characters, the bartender i based on myself, the hobo i made up..... I'm still trying to decide whether i want to post the storyboards or not.....

Hey folks, back with another update! so as you all may know, I've been working at Six Flags over Georgia over the summer while at school. the thing is, I've been drawing caricatures for about 4-5 years now, so the drawing aspect is no problem. When i started though, the materials were marker and color stick, no biggie, picked it up in like 2 weeks. I get here and BAM!!!! graphite and airbrush..... I never used airbrush or been good with any physical painting materials in my life... so far I've been using the airbrush for about 5-6 weeks....

the 1st one was done about 3 weeks into it, with a little help from Tony Fasin, the 2nd one was done yesterday, I guess it would be considered week 6, looks like i'm improving! i dunno, what do u think?

Firebreather challenge!

YO! folks I jus want to start off by saying that this has been a VERY trying year, definitely learned SOOOOO much, and DEFINITELY been HUGE on the opportunities!! I've been SOOOO busy doing crap but here's pretty much all the work.... i guess it's paying off.... I got an internship with GAIJIN STUDIOS which is which has some of the most AMAZING artists I kno including Brian Stelfreeze, Cully Hamner, and and Karl Story.... then I got a coloring job with ONI PRESS, in which FOR NOW I just do the FLATS so the ACTUAL colorists job will be much easier, but i'll be coloring something soon, not too soon though i'm kinda nervous.... plus I have other things coming as well but I don't want to give too much away too soon so for now, here's my submission for Phil Hester's "Firebreather" challenge..... for more info, check out the guys over at the Temple of Cartoon Mojo , might even be able to see what others submitted as well but here's mine from the womb to the tomb....

I finally finished the three comics pages for class I'm calling "a Father's sin" hopefully when you reading it you'll REALLY enjoy the storytelling.... alls I can say is things aren't always what they seem... Again, overall though, it didn't come out COMPLETELY the way I wanted as far as the drawing OR the colors... but I still like how it came out....

Just did a 3 pg research paper on one of my favorite color artist, Marte Gracia. I actually got a one on one interview with him to do it to!! even though I felt a little bad because he's behind on coloring Hercules but he's working through it.... but here it is...

After a great interview, I found out a lot of useful information about comic book colorist, Marte Gracia. Gracia was born in Mexico, in 1980. He grew up reading comics and decided that it was what he wanted to do as a profession. Overall he’s a great artist drawing and color wise, but in the professional world he’s known as the colorist Martegod from comic art studio, Studio F. Just recently, in February, Gracia parted ways with a studio founded by Francisco Ruiz Velasco, called Studio F, to pursue comics on his own. He says, “we decided to split up Studio F at that moment,“ “we are all still friends and hang out for movies and stuff, we just don't work at the same place.” Just to give a brief history on studio F; Velasco is an amazing artist who, at the time was working on the “Battlegods” series. He called names like Edgar Delgado, Gracias’ mentor, who was doing some local publishing in Mexico and the studio began to grow color wise. He says that those were the “Golden years.” More titles were asked to be done by them so more hands were needed. Ironically, the studio was on Pintores Mexicanos street, which means “Mexican Painters.” They sold the house where the studio was located, though, and relocated somewhere else in Monterrey, Mexico. The old studio is now a Starbucks. When Marte Gracia entered the studio, he says, “The first day I went to the studio I was really nervous because there was so many OVERTALENTED dudes there and I respect all of them, I took the tablet with my shaky hands and colored a page from VENOM#2,”” that was my first assignment.” His first assignments professionally began in April 2003, but before that he had art published locally for a couple of years. He remembers going back home having done his first pro-stuff and being totally geeked out because comics are what he’s been wanting to do for so long and his chance had finally come. Since then, Gracia has done work for Dark horse, Top Cow, Windstorm, and Marvel Comics. Some of the titles he’s work on include, Venom, Marvel team up, X-men: Age of Apocalypse, New X-men, Wraith Born, New Warriors, Darkness, and more including his current colors on the Hercules series.
I asked Marte gracia a couple of questions regarding his techniques and beliefs about coloring for sequential art and he gave me some very valuable information. For starters, I asked him about technique. What his preferred technique was and how he applied it. His preferred technique is selection cuts because he feels that the style is dynamic and fast. Many different, great effects can be created with just a few clicks. Also, at the same time, coloring is not just about technique. It is about achieving the image in your head. Letting the colors work for the drawing. Whether it’s through selection cuts, hard cuts, or soft cuts, there’s nothing better than knowing the basic fundamentals of values and color theory. When you really study and know this, your technique comes natural and makes everything work.
Gracia also believes that there is no good or bad image because everything is subjective. I asked him what does he look for in a good or bad image. He says, “Personally I just FEEL the goodness in a finished piece, it feels round and complete, it feels good to complete an image and it actually looks like what you had in mind. It’s easy to read, it's eye candy. When you simply flip a page without caring of how its colored or when you don’t notice a cover in the shelves.. That is a bad image.” I agree as well. Yes, I think that coloring is definitely appropriate for story telling, but I feel like it should pop out to a read as soon as they see it on a shelf. It should help bring the reader in and want to read the story. So then I asked if colors should just appeal to the eye of if they serve a different purpose. “You are trying to communicate something with a comic book, so coloring has to work to achieve that, so coloring is serving a superior purpose.

Gracia mentions that, “What separates a good colorist of a bad colorist is your view to the whole thing a comic book is.” “You can choose words to say something meaningful or you can just say something just empty and gray, coloring is just the same. You need to decide what you will say with coloring.” Most comic book artist these days, believe that in comics detail is the key. Attention to every single fabric and fold of a cloth gets the big bucks and makes you a star in comics. Having the artist and the colorist compete in the image over how much detail they can put in an image. The only problem is that it gets distracting. When the artist and colorist are competing for attention, the message in the image itself gets lost and it because a showdown between who’s better than the two. Gracia makes a good point when he says that the colors should work along with the pencils to create a story. The fact that you can either choose to tell a bland story by trying to look cool, or choose to tell an awesome story by taking your color theory studies and value studies and applying them the best way you know how to clearly show a reader what it is you are trying to say.
I finally ask him who were some of his influences on coloring in general. Of course he mentioned some of the artists of Studio F because working with such awesome talent for a little less than five years would make it extremely hard for a person not to grow in what they like to do. He also mentioned Hieronymus Bosch above all, who was a Flemish painter in the 15th century, Justin Ponsor, who’s soft cuts and painterly style in today’s comic industry gets his point across, and Rembrandt one of the painters from the 16th century who, because of the way he portrayed lighting, influence art as we know it today.
Speaking with Marte Gracia was definitely a learning experience and I hope to be as good as him as far as his views and skill at what he does. I’m definitely going to try to apply the stuff he mentioned and, even though I feel like I want to grow more as a penciller, try to become a great colorist as well.

New Sequentials "a father's sin"

Three page story i'm currently working on for my coloring 4 comics class.... I called it, "A Father's sin." It's basically about murder an revenge. BUT there's a Huge twist in the end that makes the story pretty interesting..... In the end it will be full colored and lettered, but for now, here are the the pencil and inks......overall i kinda like the drawin, but it's still not where I want it to be... Then after everything I learned about coloring.... I have NO idea how to approach it.... I WANT to color the way I normally do, but i don't want to over render as I've previously been told, so i dunno, we'll see...

It's been a while, but I have been working REALLY hard trying to do BIG things, including becoming an all around better atrist... here's some recent sketches and ink studies i did, just a couple pin-ups and sketches, some of which i did for the guys over at The Temple.... I'm definitely learning so much about comics, drawing, and the understanding of technique... is tough but I feel like it'll pay off in the end.....

Here's some sequentials I did for a class assignment, was actually pretty proud of how it came out, even tho most of it was rushed. I think overall i just like the overall style of it. in a way it's cartoony, but with the shadows of the pencils it has a naturalistic feel to me...... kinda like mixing Humberto Ramos and Salvador Larroca in one image, which was what I was going for. Wish I couldv'e finished it, but I most likely will sometime in the future....I want to just color straight over the pencils without inks and see how it turns out.... I started doing it before but lost the file so, like i said, i'll probably complete it with the letters and colors sometime later in life....

yup.... a drawing I did a while back of a girl I liked, i'm SUPER happy with how it came out, mainly because the female figure is definitely one of my weakest points and i feel like i nailed this one one the head. Then i colored straight over the pencils and it, in a way confirmed the style and look i was goin for. plus I actually got it to look like her, which usually doesn happen.... so overall i feel like this may be one of the better pin-ups i've ever done
